This example Bee Hotel uses an old wine box, filled with wooden logs, lengths of bamboo and florists’ foam. But you can use any container and any combination of these materials, as long as it protects the bees from rain, the wood is untreated and the holes are no bigger than 10mm in diameter.

Different species nest in holes of different sizes, so it’s worth drilling holes of a variety of diameters (between 2mm and 10mm) to attract the widest variety of species.

You will need...

Small logs or pieces of wood

A selection of plant stems (eg bamboo and sunflower stems)

Sandpaper

A drill and wooden drill bits

Dry florists’ foam (optional)

An untreated wooden box (I used an old wine box)

Pencils

A rustproof bracket
