Abstract Typical methods for the evaluation of food substitutes for bees involve the measurement of consumption rates and the surface area of brood. As the basis for the evaluation of the biological value of food we can use bee lifespan, body protein content, body dry mass, morphological changes in the cells of midgut epithelium, as well as the size of internal organs being directly affected by the consumed food. In this case a good model for study are the pharyngeal glands, which typify organs that react quickly to changes in the nutritive value of the food.
